What is the Applicant Tracking System (ATS)?

An applicant tracking system, commonly referred to as an ATS, is a software application that enables the electronic handling of a company's recruitment needs. An applicant tracking software allows an organization to collect and store candidate and job related data and track and monitor the process of candidates through all stages of the hiring process.

Applicant tracking software can be used to post job openings on a corporate website or job board, screen resumes, and generate interview requests to potential candidates by email. Other features include pre-screening questions, source tracking, and source effectiveness reports and resume process tools.

What this means to the jobseeker is that the resume format MUST have certain headers and keywords need to be incorporated that are relevant to the career objective. The software reading the document will look for these headers and count the number of times it sees words used in the search key. All of this will determine if the resume makes its way to the top so that the applicant can generate the job interview.

What is an eResume?  What is a scannable format?  How are they used?

If you are pasting/posting your resume on the internet, it must be a plain text/eResume version of your document, and needs to have key words incorporated into the document.  All of our package orders include this format.  A "scannable" copy of your resume is to be used only if a prospective employer requests one from you, so they may place your information into their electronic database.  The scannable format is very similar in appearance to the plain text/eResume document with the only difference being the type font (Arial 10) which is a universaly accepted type font for scanning/electronic filing.

​What is the purpose of a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is an introduction to your resume and provides a brief summary of your qualifications for the position you are seeking.  Your resume should never be sent without a cover letter.  The cover letter is an important part of your presentation and reflects your knowledge of the employer's needs.
